The Cognitive Benefits of OPCs 🧠

The Cognitive Benefits of OPCs 🧠

Brain fog can be scary. We’ve all had moments of forgetfulness, when we try to recall a word or a name but can’t quite place it.

But brain fog is different. It’s stronger and more persistent, and it isn’t pleasant. It might come across as difficulty completing tasks you used to be able to do, trouble concentrating, or just a feeling of mush in your brain that leaves you frustrated.

Sometimes the culprit is just a poor night’s sleep. Other times, brain fog can be caused by more severe issues, like nutrient deficiencies or hormonal imbalances. Most frustrating of all is when we start to lose memory as we age, due to normal cognitive decline or even dementia.

Whatever the cause, it’s hard to experience memory loss and concentration issues. The good news is, antioxidants (specifically OPCs) offer help for memory and brain function!

OPCs and Memory Loss from Dementia

In 2009 the British Journal of Nutrition published an exciting study on OPCs and brain function. Researchers found that when given OPC supplements, animals that suffered from age-related memory loss improved greatly.

The researchers believed that the results could eventually translate into protection against dementia.

A similar study showed that grape seed extract could battle memory loss due to Alzheimers.

Several studies have linked red wine to decreased aging-related memory loss but have all expressed concern about encouraging more alcohol consumption. (As we’ve written about before, alcohol can increase free radicals and lead to oxidative stress!

Fortunately, red wine extract offers the same benefits without the negative effects.

A 2016 study showed that red wine extract could protect the brain against both Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease by battling oxidative stress linked to those conditions.

As more research is done, more researchers and scientists have jumped on board. It’s very possible that in the future OPCs will be part of a recommendation to prevent dementia caused by Alzheimers and other diseases.

OPCs and General Memory Loss

But OPCs also offer memory and cognitive benefits beyond the scope of dementia. Green tea extract has been shown to improve memory and focus levels, even in those with more minor memory loss concerns.

This could offer answers to several questions:

Is there a way to prevent age-related memory decline? Is there a way to reverse it once it happens? What about amnesia from trauma?

Future studies and research will likely continue to prove what we already know—OPCs do help improve memory, decrease brain fog, and even battle dementia!
