What a multivitamin is actually for

What a multivitamin is actually for

Key takeaway

A multivitamin covers the small gaps in an ordinary week of meals. It works alongside good food, never instead of it.

Most of us eat the same dozen or so meals on repeat. Some weeks are full of vegetables. Some weeks are toast, coffee, and whatever was quick. That is ordinary life, and it is exactly the situation a daily multivitamin was made for.

It is also one of the most misunderstood things on the shelf. Here is a plain look at what a multivitamin does, what it does not, and how to tell a good one from the rest.

What it is for

Your body uses a long list of vitamins and minerals every day, and it cannot make most of them on its own. Food is the best source. A multivitamin is a steady baseline underneath it, so the weeks that fall short on variety are covered.

Think of it the way you think of a morning glass of water. It is not the whole day. It is the part you can count on.

What it is not

  • A replacement for food. Vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains bring fiber and thousands of plant compounds that no single scoop or tablet can copy.
  • A fix for anything. A multivitamin supports normal body function. It does not treat or cure illness, and no honest brand will tell you it does.
  • A case of more is better. Higher numbers on a label are not a score. More on that below.

How to read a multivitamin label

Breadth. A good multivitamin covers a wide base of essentials in one serving. XtraVite has 12 vitamins and 9 minerals: vitamins A, C, D, and E, eight B vitamins, and calcium, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, and potassium.

% Daily Value above 100. Many multivitamins, ours included, list some nutrients above 100%. On XtraVite, most of the B vitamins are, and vitamin B12 is well above it. Minerals like calcium and magnesium sit much lower, because a full day's amount would not fit in one scoop. If you take other supplements, add up the totals so you are not doubling up, and ask your doctor if you are unsure.

Why ours is a powder

The best multivitamin is the one you actually take. For a lot of people, the problem with a multivitamin is the pill. It is large, it is hard to swallow, or it sits in the cabinet and gets forgotten.

XtraVite is a powder instead. One serving, about 3/4 of a teaspoon, mixes into 2 oz of water. There are 90 servings in a bottle, about three months if you take it daily.
